A historically inspired song about the origins and meaning of the liberty pole and liberty cap, symbols that became associated with resistance to tyranny, civic identity, and the struggle for self-government during the American Revolution and earlier republican movements. “The Cap and Pole” traces the lineage of these symbols from the ancient world through colonial America, where they became public declarations of defiance against arbitrary power and political corruption.
The song explores how ordinary citizens used visible symbols to communicate ideas about liberty, independence, resistance, and shared civic duty. At the same time, it reflects on how symbols evolve, are repurposed, forgotten, or stripped from their historical context over time.
